Too Small, Too Slow

I grew up in Austin, playing at the highest levels of club soccer. Then, at 11, I was benched for a whole season. My coach didn't value technique. I was too small, too slow and not strong enough for his standards.

So I walked away from organised club soccer for two years and went to the pickup games in the park. Between the ages of 11 and 13, I played against grown men: college players, former pros, people from football cultures all over the world who truly understood the game. I grew more in those games than I ever had in a club.

When I returned to club soccer, I played a year up until I graduated high school. That experience shaped everything I believe about how players develop.

Playing Career

  • France: semi-pro and third division
  • Romania: second division
  • Austin Aztecs: PDL, precursor to Austin FC
  • Jamaica: Harbour View, Premier League
  • Sweden: second division and first division
  • Malta: Melita FC, First Division

Becoming a Coach

I started coaching during my injury, mentored by a former Watford and Elche player who rehabbed me back to fitness while I coached at his new club, the Hutto Gunners. When my playing career ended, I committed to coaching full time.

  • 2009/10: helped build the Hutto Gunners, which later merged with the Austin Texans
  • Liverpool FC America
  • One World: home of the FC Barcelona Escola flagship program in Austin and Pflugerville
  • 2015: founded Footwork Labs
  • The Soccer Hub: helped open the facility and created its coaching curriculum
  • Cap City SC: semi-pro coaching in Austin
  • 2022: moved to Dallas–Fort Worth, working with Lethal Weapons Futsal and Allegiance/DKSC
  • 2023 onward: fully independent, building Futbol Without Limits

Why I Started Footwork Labs

Club culture hadn't changed since I was a kid. The same priorities were still upside down: physicality and winning at young ages, instead of technical mastery and real, holistic development.

Doing things properly often means going back to cover fundamentals players have missed. To clubs and to parents chasing results, that can look like a step backwards. I needed the freedom to do it right, so I built my own program.

How I Coach

  • At least 75% technical. Ball mastery, first touch, passing, both feet, comfort in the air and game-realistic skill combinations.
  • Show, not just tell. Kids learn by example, and I demonstrate at a professional level.
  • Fix the cause, not the symptom. I don't shout about a mistake. I look at what caused it: the thought process, the biomechanics or the technique.
  • Detail matters. Parents have called my attention to detail "borderline OCD." I take that as a compliment.

Technique + Application = Transformation

Football is a mind game expressed with the feet. A player can see the perfect pass, but without the body control to execute it, the idea goes nowhere. My job is to build both.

The Players

I've coached every age and level, from pre-academy to the oldest youth teams and semi-pro, and players I've worked with have trained against the likes of Manchester United.

Back in Austin, early in my Footwork Labs years, I worked with a group of eight players from the time they were young. Three years later, all eight were selected for the Austin FC Academy.

Some of the players I've coached since they were nine have gone on to play at top colleges across the nation. And in my later career here in Dallas, I've coached players who have gone on to play professionally overseas.

The credit belongs to them and their families. I believe in the long game of development, and I'm proud to walk that walk alongside them.

Still a student of the game.
